Encumbrance of Suits of Horse Armour by SIZ

Have you ever wondered how heavy your horse's armour should be? The RuneQuest rules give no values for horse armour. When I was running, I needed to have a method of determining horse armour ENC and came up with the following table. It is not exact, but gives a very good approximation of the ENC of suits of different types of horse armour.

The table shows the ENC of a suit of armour of a particular type for a particular SIZ in RuneQuest 3 ENC. I have restricted the table to SIZ 50 as that covers most PC types - Giant PCs shouldn't wear armour in any case. To save space, I have given each armour type a Code which is explained in the Key.

All metal armour is assumed to be bronze. To convert to other metals, use the standard conversion factors from the RuneQuest 3 rulebook.

Key

A = Clothes
B = Soft Leather
C = Stiff Leather
D = Cuirboilli
E = Bezainted
F = Ring mail
G = Lamellar
H = Scale Mail
I = Chain Mail
J = Brigandine
K = Plate Mail

Each part of a suit of armour has an ENC in proportion to the entire Suit. So, to calculate the ENC of a single leg of SIZ 30 Plate Armour, find the SIZ/Type entry - in this case 72.0 and multiply by the factor for an arm (0.2) to get 72.0 x 0.2 = 14.4 ENC.

Each Leg = 0.1
Hind Quarters = 0.25
Fore Quarters = 0.25
Head = 0.1

For horse-like mounts,for instance dogs, cats, Praxian herd beasts use the following table without changes.

For centaurs, of particluar interest to me as I used to run Shergar Sunhoof as a PC, calculate SIZ values as follows:: Equivalent Human SIZ = Centaur SIZ / 2; Equivalent Horse SIZ = Centaur SIZ x 0.9
So, a large Centaur, SIZ 36, would use Human Armour as if he were SIZ 18 and Horse Armour as if he were SIZ 32.
