One of the parts of RQ that is seriously lacking in detail is Spirit
Plane Encounters. RQ2 has tables for POW and INT of Spirits encountered,
reaction tables and some fairly detailed encounter tables for different
regions, but these are encounters in the normal plane. RQ3 has encounter
tables for the three different regions of the Spirit Plane, but no POW
guidelines and no regional tables. In fact, the RQ3 tables are very limited
indeed.
There was a discussion a few years back, on the RQ-Rules list, where someone asked how to treat Spirit Encounters within temples. I made the comment that what we needed was Spirit Plane Encounter Tables for specific areas, one of which should include Temples. However, I haven't had the time to write such tables up until now. It has been quite difficult and I am not at all happy with some of the tables, specifically the Local, Exotic and Other/Demon tables, which all require a lot more work to fill them out properly. One of the problems we have is that there are not that many different types of spirits written up, so we are limited when talking about Local or Exotic spirits. For example, what kind of Local Spirits can be found in an Aldryami Forest? Plant spirits, earth spirits and Aldryami spirits, but what are they? Have they been written up anywhere? We have Jack-In-The Greens, Gnomes and that's about it.
Writing these tables up was quite difficult in many ways. Firstly, I didn't realize how boring it would be, going through table after table, trying to work out what spirits would be found in what area. Secondly, there are actually very few types of spirit around, compared to creature types. Thirdly, I found it difficult to balance the types across each of the different regions.
I have used the RQ2 Regions, together with a few new regions. The regions I have added are Lake, Sea, Oasis, Desert, Steppe, Magical Land and Temple. I split River into River, Lake and Sea because I believe that the Spirits encountered in a Lake or Sea will be different to those in a River. I added Oasis, Desert and Steppe because I thought that the spirits of the Oases would mbe different to those of Prax and that the Pentian Steppe spirits and Desert spirits would be different to those of Prax/Open Country. Magical Lands are different to anything else in Glorantha and should have a different mix of spirits, as should Temples, as they have their own little bubble of spirits surrounding them.
I have used 1D20s as the standard dice roll for several reasons. Firstly,
RQ2 uses 1D20 for its normal encounter rolls and they seem to work really
well. Secondly, using percentage dice makes the encounter tables to unwieldy,
as each table must use the same range of dice rolls to make it easier to
draw them. Thirdly, HeroQuest uses 1D20s as its standard dice, so this
may fit in with that.
The tables have been split by Region and by Spirit Type. Each table gives the result of a 1D20 roll, the result either states a Spirit Encounter or a Spirit Type. If the roll is a Spirit Type then please refer to the table for that Spirit Type and roll another 1D20 against the appropriate Region. Carry on doing this until a Spirit Encounter is rolled. For example, Samana Spirit-Stroker is travelling through Prax and the GM rolls under her and her Fetch's total POW, so she has a Spirit Plane Encounter. Jack, Samana's player, rolls a 19 on a 1D20 on the Frontier Region Table and proceeds to the Outer Plane, he rolls 1D20 again and rolls a 20, this send her into the Inner Plane, so he rolls 1D20 again and gets a 1, Cult/Religion, so he rolls another 1D20 and rolls a 1 again - the Eternal Battle. The GM rules that Samana has encountered a spirit from the Eternal Battle Magical Land and he rolls again and gets a 10, Local Spirit, the GM asks him to roll again on the Magical Land Local Spirit table and rolls a 1 - a Founder Spirit. The GM is appalled and amused by Jack's unlucky dice rolls and decides that Samana has encountered the spirit of Storm Bull himself as part of the Eternal Battle and Samana decides to try and ally him to try and obtain some reusable Divine Magic from him.
Obviously, this is an extreme example, most encounters take two dice rolls to decide on the encounter. However, it should illustrate how it s possible to get an extremely unusual encounter by rolling very high or very low on the 1D20. The chances of randomly rolling an Eternal Battle encounter is approximately 2/20 x 2/20 x 2/20 x 1/20 or 1 in 20,000, so it should be very rare.
In RQ3, discorporate shamans can move through the Spirit Plane, so can adjust the dice roll by their Fetch's POW. The same principle applies here, although for a D20, we have to adjust the range of movement available. There are several ways of doing this.
Discorporate Spirits may or may not be able to move through the Spirit Plane. If the GM says they can, then they will be able to influence encounters by one place per 20 POW or part thereof or using Spirit Travel.
Normally, encounters should be rolled on the Frontier Region Table, as this is where the Spirit Plane meets the Normal Plane. If a roll is made to move to the Outer Region, or the Inner Region later on, then the encounter is drawn from that Region. I have not made any distinction between Regions when writing up the Spirit Type Tables, so an encounter of a Nymph in the Frontier Region has the same chance of rolling a particular type of Nymph as one in the Inner Plane. You could write up your own tables for the different Regions, if you prefer. Don't forget that spirits in the Outer or Inner Regions will on average be larger/more powerful than those in the Frontier Region.
If a character is discorporate and spends a long time on the Spirit Plane, for instance when searching for a particular type of Spirit, then he stays in the particular Region that he has rolled. So, if he went to the Outer Region on his first encounter then he remains in the Outer Region until he moves to the Inner Plane, becomes Corporate again or can change the die roll to less than 1 on the Region Encounter Table. So, Samana discorporates at the Paps and Jack rolls a 17, but Samana rolls a special Spirit Travel and chooses to move to the Outer Plane where she meets a Gnome. However, Samana doesn't want a Gnome as she has a couple already, so she talks it into leaving her alone. Then she moves into the Inner Plane and navigates to the Cult/Religion area and rolls 12, Guardian Spirit, but Jack fumbles his Spirit Travel roll and the GM moves to Spirit of Reprisal and Samana meets One Ear who says that she has not fought Chaos often enough and takes her Impede Chaos spells from her. Shaken, she tries again and rolls a 15, Spirit of Reprisal, but specials Spirit Travel and moves to Deity, she rolls 10, Cult Spirit Lord, and contacts a son of Ronance who teaches her a Divine Magic Spell to make the wheels of her wagon unbreakable.
In the above example, the GM ruled that the Paps was a Magical Land for Spirit Plane Travel. He could have ruled that it was a Temple. Once Samana had reached the Inner Region and had reached Cult/Religion, the GM ruled that she was in a sub-region of the Paps Inner Region so further rolls would be made in that area, until she managed to move below 1 and leave the area, in which case she would be on the Inner Region Table. This may seem complicated, but it is fairly easy if you imagine movement through the Spirit Plane as between different regions and areas rather than just a random series of encounters.
There may be some circumstances where it is not certain which region to use. For instance, what if someone was on the banks of a river in a troll area? Do you use the River or Troll Area table? What if someone was in a temple, in a ruin in an Aldryami Forest? Which table should be used? Are you more likely to meet the temple spirits, the spirits of the ruin of the spirits of the Aldryami Forest that lies all around? This is a GM decision, but I would allocate a percentile range depending on the particular circumstances. For instance, in the first case I would say 01-50 River 51-100 Troll Area. In the second case I would say 01-40 Temple 41-60 Ruin 61-100 Aldryami Forest, because the temple is quite strong and has been here for a while, but the ruin is fairly recent and has not had time to build up its own spirits. In cases where there are massive local areas, such as when inside a Temple in Dokat in Dorastor or in a Temple in the Troll Area of the Big Rubble then I would allocate the chances depending on what is the biggest local factor, so Dorastor is ever-present but is not overwhelming but Dokat is a very powerful ruin and the temple is quite weak, so 01-50 Ruin 51-85 Dorastor 86-100 Temple. The Big Rubble has quite a large influence over its Spirit Plane and the troll Temple is very strong, so 01-50 Ruin 51-90 Temple 91-100 Troll Area. Such judgements are quite arbitrary and the GM must either make decisions quickly or have decided beforehand what the mix should be.
What about the chances of an encounter in any particular area? Typically,
a shaman must roll his/her POW and fetch's POW every 24 hours, so Samana
has a 51% chance of a random spirit encounter each day, so she will be
likely to meet something every 2 days. However, what about when Samana
is travelling through a place that has very many spirits, such as a Magical
Land or a place with very few spirits, such as a Desert? Should she have
the same chance of encountering a spirit? What about discorporate shamans
or characters? How often are they likely to encounter a spirit? Because
of these questions, I have tried to put down guidelines as to how often
a roll should be made to see whether an encounter has occurred.

So, from this table we can see that a Shaman will roll an encounter
every hour, one of the reasons why shamans tend to avoid towns. For a shaman's
random chance of meeting a spirit, use Shaman's POW + Fetch's POW % as
the chance, not the chance given in the table. When a shaman is discorporate,
use the chance given in the table. Don't forget that most encounters are
harmless, Power Spirits will flutter around a shaman all day, like moths
to a flame, and most ghosts will simply want a chat. Please avoid rolling
silly results, for instance Shamans are unlikely to meet Orlanth on a random
encounter, even in Boldhome. If you think they might, then give them a
dream or a vision rather than have them meet the deity itself. Similarly,
a Kolati Shaman in an Orlanth Great Temple is unlikely to meet a Chaos
Demon, unless the temple is under attack. If you as GM think that a roll
is silly, then roll it again or ignore it. If the same thing comes up again
then it is just Fate.
Treat Spirit Plane Travel as exactly that - travel through the Spirit Plane.
The Shaman starts off by entering the Spirit Plane. He then travels to different areas searching for different types of spirit. Depending on which type of spirit he wants to meet, he goes to different parts, realms or sub-regions of the Spirit Plane. As he enters each region or realm, he may find that he cannot access other areas until he leaves that particular realm. The GM should describe what he sees and how that part of the Spirit Plane looks, appears and sounds to the shaman.
For instance, Samana travels to the Block in order to fight one of the Chaos Spirits that are trapped beneath the Block itself. She discorporates and enters the Frontier Region of the Spirit Plane. This looks like Prax, but is dominated by a presence of overwhelming weight that stands in front of her, this is the Block itself. She enters the Outer Region and encounters a ghost that warns her away and attacks her when she tries to pass. Samana defeats the ghost but releases it as she has no wish to bind one of Storm Bull's servants. She then encounters a sylph that tries to blow her back to her body, but she defeats it and ties it into her hair. She enters the Inner Plane and meets a Fear Spirit that tries to make her scared of the Block and the things beneath it, but she scares it off. She then enters the Cult/Religion area and meets a Guardian Spirit who warns her away from going any further, but she fights and defeats him. She rolls Cult./Religion again and enters the Chaos Realm beneath the block, rolling Guardian again, this time meeting a grossly deformed broo who attacks her in spirit combat. She fights it and defeats it, binding it into a piece of dung. It is too dangerous to go straight back to her body, for other spirits may be following her, so she tries to leave the Chaos Realm but meets a Special Spirit, an Incubus that tries to seduce her, but she defeats it and binds it into one of her nipple rings. She tries again to leave and succeeds (rolling a 2 and then moving it to 0), she meets a Guardian who tries to stop her from leaving the Chaos Realm, but she defeats this servant of Storm Bull and lets it go. She then navigates to the Outer Region and then the Frontier Region where she returns to her body, safe in the knowledge that spirits would not have followed her past the Guardians. The GM describes her entering the Spirit Plane and travelling through Prax towards the Block that towers above her, she meets a ghost who warns her away but she defeats it, she meets a sylph who tries to blow her back to her body but she binds it into her hair. Then she goes beneath the Block, where it is dark and full of fear and she meets a spirit that fills her with the dread of the place, but she defeats it and send it packing. She follows a crack deep beneath the earth and meets a Minotaur dressed in Copper who warns her not to enter the Chaos Realm, but she dodges his axe and trips him up. er head is pounding with pain as she enters a tear in the ground, pulsating with shades of blood and grey. She meets a grossly deformed broo who attacks her and tries to force himself upon her, but she throws in to the ground and leaps upon it, tying it up and binding it into a piece of dung. She tries to leave, but makes a wrong turn, meeting a handsome man with a kind face who tries to seduce her with his sweet words, but Samana is having none of it and kicks him between the legs, binding him in one of her nipple rings. She finds the way out and meets a giant bull which charges her, but she side-steps it and slams its head to the ground. She leaves the Crack of Pain and passes throughout the tunnel until she reaches the surface again. She walks past the cracks in the ground and through the grass until she sees where she is sitting and drumming and she re-enters her body, tired but safe.
In my opinion, Spirit Plane Travel and Spirit Quests can be every bit
as exciting as normal travels and encounters. It is up to the GM and the
player to work together to make such trips interesting and exciting. For
instance, when Samana rolls Cult/Religion as an encounter, the GM must
decide which realm this is. Is it Storm Bull's Realm or the Chaos Realm?
He decides it is the Chaos Realm, but that Samana meets a Guardian who
tries to stop her from entering. If there is a choice of realms or outcomes
and the player wants to do a certain thing and the character has succeeded
in Spirit Travel, then be generous, allow the character to enter the correct
realm and move towards what she wants. If the Spirit Travel was a failure
or a fumble then make sure the character goes to the wrong realm and has
to find her way out again. Describe the realms as places, not just as the
Spirit Plane. Describe the encounters as people, describe how they attack
or what they say, a broo will attack in a different way to a minotaur,
a ghost or guardian might try and speak to the shaman or might try to help
the shaman. Describe the combat as a series of events, not just as a series
of POW vx POW or Spirit Combat rolls. Be inventive, that's what makes these
fun to play.
It is very easy to treat the Spirit Plane as a hostile place where
every spirit is out to get you, but this is generally not true. Most spirits
just carry on with their tasks day in, day out, and don't much care when
they are disturbed. Some will be friendly and want a chat, some may be
hostile but can be befriended, some may be friendly and be insulted, becoming
an enemy. It all depends on what kind of spirit is encountered.
This is where RQ2 comes into its own again. Believe you me, there is so much in the RQ2 rules that was dropped for RQ3 that is so useful. RQ2 has a set of Response Charts that gives a random response to an encounter. So, even friendly encounters can be hostile and hostile ones turn out to be friendly.
The GM must decide whether the encounter is likely to be Friendly, Neutral
or Hostile, then he, or a player, rolls percentile dice and consults the
table to see what kind of reaction happens. PCs may have a bonus or penalty
on this table, depending on what they have done or what the circumstances
of the meeting are. For instance, a Waha Shaman encountering an Eiritha
Guardian in an Eiritha Temple would probably be friendly, but if he is
holding a recently bound Eirithan cult spirit then the GM may give a +25%
penalty, so his dice roll is increased by 25.

As a general rule, hostile enconters with an unfriendly response will
probably attack. Friendly encounters with an unfriendly response will rarely
attack, although any response of hatred will normally end up in an attack.
If circumstances have meant that a penalty has been given to the repines
table, then there is more chance of an attack. So, the Waha shaman above
rolls 68, which would normally be "encountered creature takes an active
dislike to the party, just short of blind hatred", but the +25% penalty
changes this to a 93, "encountered creature cannot conceal its contempt
and/or hatred for the party" and, since he is in her temple with a recently
bound cult spirit, the Guardian attacks.

Now, some spirits are inherently more powerful than others, for instance
you will never see a 1D6 POW Nymph and will rarely see a 12D6+6 POW Power
Spirit. So, the following table gives some adjustments to the standard
roll. The GM may choose to use these or not, probably on a case by case
basis, but he should decide before the dice are rolled.

So, Samana encounters a Nymph in the Frontier Region, the GM rolls a 35 which would give INT 2D6+3 POW 3D6, but the Frontier Region gives Nymphs a + 2, moving to a POW 4D6+6 INT 3D6+3, which is still below average for a Nymph.
Alternatively, GMs may choose to say that all Nymphs of a certain type
have the same POW, so may use the normal POW roll for a Nymph.
Each Table consists of the name of the table, a series of terrain
types and a row for each result of 1D20. The columns refer to the outcome
of rolli ng that result for that terrain type. I have not put in hyperlinks
for these results, so you have to page down to the correct area or print
it out and refer to the pages.
I have tried to group spirits together for the top-level table, then
to expand them in the later tables. So, there are a lot of results for
Malign Spirit, but these break down further in the Malign Spirit Table.
Similarly, there are tables for Nymphs, Disease Spirits and so on. I have
grouped the bog standard RQ3 spirits as Utility Spirits because people
bind them all the time.
Some terms may need explaining:
Skill Spirits | Like Spell Spirits, these may be overcome in Spirit Combat, if reduced to 0 MPs they teach their skill to the victor. The skill starts at 1D6%+Bonus |

As you can see from some of the tables, they are not quite finished. I am having trouble identifying demons, local spirits and exotic spirits. If you have any ideas, please email me and I will amend the tables accordingly. In fact, I would appreciate feedback on what is good, what needs changing and what needs taking out entirely.
I am working on more types of Nymphs which will flesh out the Nymphs
table and I intend to write up a lot of the new spirits from the Hero Quest
game, but that will take some time. Does anyone have any nice little spirits,
demons or whatever that they can let me have so that can add them
to these tables?
