Mythos

Orlanth, King of the Gods, wanted a Winter Wife. His Summer Wife, Ernalda, was good and bountiful but was also fickle and unfaithful [1] and he wanted a steadier wife. He looked around at those from other Tribes and saw none suitable. When he looked at the Storm Tribe he saw the daughter of his nephew Valind and his own half-sister [2], Inora, and decided to court her. With this in mind, he put on his best tunic and travelled to Winter Hill where she had a Palace.

At the foot of Winter Hill, Orlanth saw the Emperor's Son, Yelmalio, with whom he had a quarrel, so he concealed himself until the Bright God walked by, otherwise he knew that if Yelmalio saw him he would run away whimpering. Orlanth leapt out and fought the Bright God, breaking his shield and dealing him a blow on the head, stunning him. Orlanth took the Bright God's Lightning Spear and Golden Armour as trophies, leaving him naked and bleeding in the snow.

Next, Orlanth came to the Winter Palace and roared so loudly that the icicles fell to the floor and Snow Pixies died of fright. He entered the Winter Palace brandishing the Lightning Spear to show Inora how powerful he was. He gave Inora the gift of the Golden Armour and asked to embrace his sister. As they embraced, he made his offer for her to become his Winter Wife and they fell to the floor in their embrace. However, he kissed him and refused his offer, saying that his breath was too fierce for her. He stormed away in a rage, vowing that as she had refused him, she must stay in the Mountains where her home was and may not come to his lands to disturb his people. It was at this time the Winter's grip on the land was loosened. [3]

After Orlanth left the Winter Palace he determined to go to the top of Winter Hill and see what he could see. He met a burned and disfigured God whom he had fought before and the two gods bellowed their challenges. Orlanth hurled the HellWind at Zorak Zoran and was amazed when the Dark God caught the Wind and swallowed it only to breathe it back at Orlanth. However, Orlanth was Master of the Winds and it could not hurt him. Zorak Zoran then roared the Hell Roar for the first time but Orlanth had no Fear and caught it in his right hand, whirling it around his head until it roared with a different voice, one of submission [4]. Then he thrust with his new Lightning Spear but Zorak Zoran countered with a new power of Blazing Fire which seemed to make the Dark God nervous allowing Orlanth to cut his legs from him. Zorak Zoran filled the area with Shadows and Orlanth could not see the Dark God, so he tried to blow the shadows away, but his breath was so powerful that he blew Zorak Zoran from the Hill and out of the tale.

Finally, Orlanth reached the Top of inter Hill and saw that the most Evil had even been there. He thundered and roared and attacked the Evil, biting things with his new Lightning Spear, whirling his new Bull Roarer and frightening some away. With the Chaos defeated, he looked out on the devastated world, seeing its Pain that he had caused. That is when he determined to act to make the world good again [5].

The Quest

The Stations on the Quest

The Orlanthi Hill of Gold Quest has Four main Stations and three lesser Stations. The main Stations are Yelmalio, Inora, Zorak Zoran and Chaos, the three lesser Stations are Ascending Winter Hill.

On the Stations, Orlanth may not heal himself of any of the wounds taken earlier in the Quest. Only Inora may heal him.

Yelmalio

Orlanth hides from Yelmalio otherwise the Bright God will see him and run away whimpering. He springs out and defeats Yelmalio, taking his Spear and Armour as trophies.

Orlanth has the advantage of surprise and has a free shot at Yelmalio. This may or may not be boosted (powered, double chance) at the GM's discretion. This is normally enough to defeat Yelmalio. He may also use Shield Heroically.

Invoking

This gives the Orlanthi Heroic use of Shield and an improved attack against Yelmalio from surprise. Orlanth may disarm the Yelmalian but may not kill him.

Ascending Winter Hill

Orlanth flew up Winter Hill rather than Climb the Hill. He used his powers of Wind and Storm.

This allows Orlanth to fly up the hill, giving Heroic use of Flight or Command Sylph.

Inora

Orlanth must give Inora a gift and try to persuade her to marry him.

Orlanth must give up the armour he gained from Yelmalio or give up something else if he gained no armour.

Orlanth must try to persuade Inora to become his wife and if she refuses he must command her to stay within her lands and not to bother his people. These can be abstracted as Oratory/Bargain rolls with bonuses for Chaste/Justice or whatever the GM feels appropriate.

Invoking

This allows Orlanth to command Inora cultists or Ice Demons/Snow Pixies/Sprites, forcing them to leave his lands, in return for a gift.

Zorak Zoran

Orlanth meets Zorak Zoran and they fight, Orlanth gains a Bull Roarer and blows Zorak Zoran from the Mountainside.

Orlanth uses Sylphs, Wind Powers and Shield Heroically. He can create a Bull Roarer after the Quest. He often loses Fanatacism or Berserker here, if he has those spells.

Invoking

This gives Orlanth Sylphs, Wind Powers and Shield Heroically.

Chaos

Orlanth meets Chaos and destroys it. He then sees what trouble he has caused and vows to make amends.

Orlanth must fight with the abilities he has gained from the Quest. He can use the Bull Roarer here, if he has made one. He may use Lightning, Sylphs, Wind Powers and Shield Heroically. Normally, he can defeat the Chaos.

Invoking

This gives the above abilities when fighting Chaos. It is a favourite Station amongst Orlanthi.

The Return

Orlanth looks out on the world and sees what destruction he has wrought, so he vows to right the wrongs that he caused.

Orlanth must roll his Justice trait in order to right the wrongs he has caused. If he fails then he will have missed the point of the Quest and will continue in his old ways.If he succeeds then he will make amends for some deed he has done in the past.

Invoking

This is sometimes used to ensure that Justice is seen to be done. It forces the Orlanthi to face up to his past deeds, although some use it to ensure that they do not have to, by deliberately failing the Justice Roll. Of course this is an improper use of the Quest. If the Orlanthi does not have to face up to his past then this is considered proof that he was not at fault.

Yelmalio

Orlanth hides from Yelmalio otherwise the Bright God will see him and run away whimpering. He springs out and defeats Yelmalio, taking his Spear and Armour as trophies.

Orlanth has an edge in this contest in that one of his Riddles is Improved. If Orlanth wins the contest then he gains Yelmalio's Spear. If he wins more than once he also gains Yelmalio's Armour.

Ascending Winter Hill

Orlanth flew up Winter Hill rather than Climb the Hill. He used his powers of Wind and Storm.

Orlanth must answer a riddle about Flying, Riding or Winds. If he succeeds he gains strength/courage, if he fails he loses a magic item/spell related to the riddle he asked.

Inora

Orlanth must give Inora a gift and try to persuade her to marry him.

Orlanth must give up the Armour he gained from Yelmalio, or failing this must give another gift to Inora. He must then riddle her for her to marry him. If she answers the riddle she will not marry him. If he fails to answer her riddle she will not marry him. The loser of any riddle round must give the winner a gift.

Zorak Zoran

Orlanth meets Zorak Zoran and they fight, Orlanth gains a Bull Roarer and blows Zorak Zoran from the Mountainside.

Here, Zorak Zoran often uses the riddle that Yelmalio asked him because he had not heard the riddle before. Orlanth has twice the normal chance of answering such as riddle as he is used to Yelmalio's stock riddles from the Riddling Contests. Zorak Zoran normally asks a riddle of Fire and Orlanth of Winds.

Chaos

Orlanth meets Chaos and destroys it. He then sees what trouble he has caused and vows to make amends.

Orlanth must ask a riddle of combat and must answer one of chaos. This Chaotic riddle is sometimes a Nysalor Riddle. He must agree to right a wrong that he has caused in the past.

The Return

Orlanth looks out on the world and sees what destruction he has wrought, so he vows to right the wrongs that he caused.

Orlanth must answer a riddle relating to a hurt he has caused. He always answers this riddle correctly and knows what he must do to right the wrong.

Yelmalio

Orlanth hides from Yelmalio otherwise the Bright God will see him and run away whimpering. He springs out and defeats Yelmalio, taking his Spear and Armour as trophies.

Once again, Orlanth has an edge in the Wagering, one of his Wagers is Improved.

Orlanth may wager anything here, but Yelmalio must first wager something Spear-related, then something armour-related.

Ascending Winter Hill

Orlanth flew up Winter Hill rather than Climb the Hill. He used his powers of Wind and Storm.

Orlanth must wager powers/spells/items regarding Flying, Riding or Winds. The Hill wagers Strength/Courage spells or abilities.

Inora

Orlanth must give Inora a gift and try to persuade her to marry him.

Orlanth must give up the armour he gained from Yelmalio or give up something else if he gained no armour. He must then wager a bride gift against Inora's promise to leave his people alone or her promise not to harm him.

Zorak Zoran

Orlanth meets Zorak Zoran and they fight, Orlanth gains a Bull Roarer and blows Zorak Zoran from the Mountainside.

Zorak Zoran normally wages some of his Fear/Demoralise powers or spells and Orlanth wagers Fanaticism or Berserker, if he has it.

Chaos

Orlanth meets Chaos and destroys it. He then sees what trouble he has caused and vows to make amends.

Orlanth must wager one of the things he gained during the Quest. If he loses it he must wager another and another until they have gone, then he must wager other abilities/powers until the Chaos has nothing left to wager or withdraws.

The Return

Orlanth looks out on the world and sees what destruction he has wrought, so he vows to right the wrongs that he caused.

Orlanth wagers his future action against a previous deed. He must attempt to right the wrong.

Notes

[1] The stories of Ernalda's unfaithful nature are well known to the Orlanthi, especially those trysts with Eurmal. Even Yelmalio was Ernalda's son and lover which was the Quarrel that Orlanth had with him.

[2] Normally, Storm Gods followed the marriage patterns of the Theyalans and would not marry close kin. However, this was before the time of Heort the Lawgiver who told the people what they could and could not do, so nobody minded.

[3] This is one way that Orlanthi can fight the onset of Winter which can affect their lands as well as those of the Dara Happans. It is one of the reasons that Orlanthi try the Hill of Gold Quest.

[4] This is how many Orlanthi gain the Bull Roarer. This is a piece of string, rope or leather with a storm rune tied to one end. When whirled around the user's head and Magic points are expended, this causes a Roaring sound. Match the MPs expended against the Magic Points of any enemies of the user within the user's POW in metres, any enemy who is defeated is demoralised.

[5] This is traditionally where Orlanth decided to fix the problems he had caused and to remake the world anew. Many Orlanthi perform this Quest before attempting the LightBringer Quest.
